Using Wish

Because the verb wish usually suggests a situation which is unreal or contrary-to-fact, it is followed by the subjunctive mood or its equivalent. Thus, after wish-just as in unreal conditional statements-a past tense is used to suggest present action and a past perfect tense is used to suggest past time.

A special use of wish occurs in the forms I wish you would and I wish you wouldn't These forms are used with a polite order giving meaning, suggestion that the person addressed stop doing what ever he is doing or begin doing something which he is not doing.

Verb Be

Traditional grammar requires the nominative form of the pronoun in the predicate of the verb be: It is I (not me); That must be they (not them), and so forth. Nearly every speaker of Modern English finds this rule difficult to follow. Even if everyone could follow it, in informal contexts the nominative pronoun often sounds pedantic and even ridiculous, especially when the verb is contracted, as in It's we. But constructions like It is me have been condemned in the classroom and in writing handbooks for so long that there seems little likelihood that they will ever be entirely acceptable in formal writing.

Personal Pronouns

The question of when to use nominative forms of the personal pronouns (for example, I, she, they) and when to use objective forms (for example, me, her, them) has always created controversy among grammarians and uncertainty among speakers and writers.

There is no problem when the pronoun stands alone with a single verb or preposition: every native speaker says I (not me) read the book; They told him (not he); The company bought a computer for us (not we); and so forth. But the decision is more problematic in other environments.
